This training will provide an overview of de-escalation techniques to be used when confronted with a volatile or psychotic client.
The experiential design of the workshop encourages self assessment of the participant's intervention style.
COURSE CURRICULUM
Be safe use Goal Oriented Interventions
Every intervention should have a goal that the intervenor is working towards. In Response the goal of every crisis intervention is to make the scene safe. Using G.O. Interventions keeps the intervenor on track and not swayed by the chaotic scene. By learning techniques for self control, participants practice staying focused on their task and avoiding the impulse to resolve a conflict without first making the scene safe.
Understanding Anger and Aggression empowers the intervenor and their clients People feel better when they can control their own actions, rather that relying on others. Teachings how to help others gain control during a crisis, starts with learning the roots of why people get angry. Learn techniques for creating an alliance with a disruptive person. Practice through the use of role plays the steps for leading a crisis and avoid becoming the target of someone else's anger.
Prevention though 1st Interventions
"Dropping the content" of the conflict and getting to the core issue helps intervenors strategize new ways for approaching the same old problems. Learn how and when to prevent reoccurring crises from the client who continually disrupts a group meeting, a resident who abuses telephone privileges, to a student who continually gets in a fight during recess. The 1st Intervention is a crisis prevention skill that teaches those in continual conflict how to pave a path towards achieving success in day to day interactions.
Self assessment through the Three Choices for Responding to Conflict. When the "shoe hits the fan" how do you respond? Do you know the strengths and limitations of your team? Participants will have fun exploring the choices available and learning how to be flexible when managing a crisis.
